INTRODUCTION
The maintenance of satisfactory academic progress is an eligibility criterion for all students attending Bon Losee Academy. Students who receive financial assistance are required by law to maintain satisfactory academic progress. "Section 484 of the Higher Education Act (HEA), as amended, requires that a student be maintaining satisfactory progress in the course of study he or she is pursuing according to the standards and practices of the institution in which he or she is enrolled in order to receive aid under the student financial assistance programs authorized by Title IV..." "Neither the Secretary of Education nor an institution has the authority to waive this requirement for any student of group of students." (Handbook, Chapter 2, Appendix A p. 3) The School is required in statute and regulation to establish standards for measuring whether a student, who is otherwise eligible for financial aid, is maintaining satisfactory progress. The following policy outlines the standards that must be met by students attending Bon Losee Academy of Hair Artistry or Bon Losee Academy of Esthetics.
GOOD STANDING
To be in good standing a student must be eligible to continue attendance and must be in compliance with the accepted and/ or approved behavior standards, practices, and rules and regulations of Bon Losee Academy. To receive financial aid assistance a student is required to be enrolled, in good standing, and must follow the prescribed guidelines established by the Academy and the Financial Aid Office.
SATISFACTORY PROGRESS
Students are required to maintain satisfactory progress both qualitatively and quantitatively. The "quality" of progress is measured by the Grade Percent Average. The "quantity" of progress requires a maximum time frame in which the student must complete their schooling objective, and after which the student is no longer maintaining satisfactory progress. Satisfactory Progress is evaluated monthly and only students who are making satisfactory progress, as defined in the "Satisfactory Progress Policy" are eligible for financial aid.
REQUIRED ATTENDANCE POLICY-QUANTITATIVE
Students must complete their program withing the maximum time frame for course completion. The maximum time frame for full-and part-time students to complete the Cosmetology or Esthetics Program offered at Bon Losee Academy is one hundred fifty percent (150%) of the amount of time required to complete contracted hours without absences. (For example: One hundred fifty percent of the 2000-hour Cosmetology program is defined as 3000 hours.) Transfer students will have one hundred fifty percent (150%) of the time required to complete the hours as listed in their contract. Time off for authorized leaves of absence will not be considered as part of the maximum time frame nor will it be used in calculating attendance averages. Quantitative Satisfactory Progress will be evaluated monthly. Full-and part-time students must earn a minimum of sixty-seven percent (67%) of their scheduled cumulative attendance hours at the evaluation period. Students meeting cumulative minimum requirements at the evaluation will be considered making satisfactory progress until the next scheduled evaluation. The chart below demonstrates an example of the minimum percentage completion rate of 67% of scheduled attendance hours to be considered maintaining satisfactory progress.

Line one on the chart indicates the scheduled number of hours the student should have been in attendance for the evaluation period. Line two shows the minimum amount of sixty-seven percent (67%) of hours that must be completed by the end of that evaluation period. (i. e., a student who is scheduled to have attended 1000 hours must have attended a minimum of 670 or more clock hours to be maintaining satisfactory progress.
REQUIRED GRADING POLICY-QUALITATIVE
Qualitative satisfactory progress will be evaluated monthly. Students are required to maintain a minimum cumulative grade percentage of 75% in practical applications. Students must also maintain a minimum cumulative grade percentage of 75% in theory courses. The passing grade for State Board Licensing is 75%. Students will be graded on Theory and Practical Clinic work based on the following scale: 90%-100% = A, 80%-89% = B, 75%-79% = C, 74% and below will considered Failing.
PROBATION AND SUSPENSION
Students who earn less than the minimum cumulative percentage of hours or do not meet the minimum cumulative grade percentage required for the evaluation period will be put on probation. Probation will be for the following one-month period.
Eligibility for student financial aid will continue during the probation period and the student will still be considered to be making satisfactory progress. If, by the end of the probationary evaluation period the financial aid recipient earns less than the minimum cumulative number of hours, or fails to meet the minimum cumulative grade percentage, the student will be considered to be not making satisfactory progress and will be suspended from aid eligibility for the next month. The student will remain suspended from financial aid eligibility until they earn at least the minimum cumulative number of hours and/ or the minimum cumulative grade percentage during a subsequent evaluation period. Reinstatement of eligibility for financial aid will be made at the beginning of the month following the suspension period. Any assistance (Pell or FFELP Loans) payments due to the student, scheduled to be made during the suspension period will be canceled. Students will be allowed one suspension. Subsequent suspensions will result in the loss of eligibility for financial aid. Students will be placed in a probationary status for the month subsequent to a suspension period if he/ she earns at least the minimum cumulative number of hours and minimum cumulative grade percentage during the prior one-month period. If, at the end of the probationary period, he/ she earns at least the minimum cumulative number of hours or the minimum cumulative grade percentage, the student will return to a regular status. Students taking a leave of absence will re-enter the school in the same status as when they left. Students who have withdrawn from the Academy and wish to return will enter in the same status as when they departed. Course incompletes, repetitions, and non-credit remedial courses have no effect upon the satisfactory progress standards.
APPEALS
Any student has the right to appeal a decision regarding satisfactory progress or financial aid eligibility. Students who wish to appeal an unsatisfactory status determination must submit a letter to the Financial Aid Officer. The letter should describe any circumstances the student feels deserve further consideration. An appeal decision will be made and the student notified in writing within 14 days. Decisions of appeal could include an extension of the probationary period, a contractual agreement of probation, or an upholding of the status determination. A reversal of eligibility status, due to a student's appeal, may result in payment for a suspended period.
DISBURSEMENT OF TITLE IV FINANCIAL AID FUNDS
Regulatory requirements advise that prior to disbursement of Title IV Financial Aid funds, a school must review the student's eligibility, including that of satisfactory progress. Therefore, before Bon Losee Academy disburses any Title IV Financial Aid assistance to a student, the student's satisfactory progress will be checked. This will ensure that at the time of disbursement the student has met the requirements as listed in the above paragraphs. Students who receive their first disbursement on the first day of class will be considered to be making satisfactory progress. Students receiving their first disbursement after the first day of class are required to meet satisfactory progress as outlined in this policy. Second disbursements will be made to students who meet all satisfactory progress requirements after actual attendance of six hundred (600) clock hours.
DENIAL OR CANCELLATION
Financial aid will be denied or canceled if a student's records indicate failure or inability to maintain good standing and/ or satisfactory progress as defined in the previous paragraphs. Students are commonly found ineligible because they have: 1) too low of a cumulative grade percentage, 2) not earning the required number of hours, or 3) attaining a point where they would be unable to complete the program in the maximum allotted time. Despite compliance with the minimum cumulative standards, a student may have aid denied or terminated if there is evidence of unwillingness to make satisfactory progress. Examples of such include undocumented attendance and grade percentages that for several months are below the minimum 75% even though the cumulative grades reflect meeting the minimum standard.
NEW APPLICANTS
New and transfer applicants to the Academy will be considered to be making satisfactory progress, unless it is indicated on a Financial Aid Transcript that the student had been suspended from financial aid eligibility for "lack of satisfactory progress". In the case where at a previous institution the student had been suspended from aid eligibility they will enter Bon Losee Academy at a probationary status. At the completion of one evaluation period the status will be reviewed and if the student is making satisfactory progress, the probationary status will be removed. In order to receive financial aid, any student who is otherwise eligible must meet standards of satisfactory progress and good standing regardless of whether he/ she previously received aid. Because there must be "consistent application of standards to all students," all students who enroll at the Academy and who then apply for financial aid must have met the same standards as an aid recipient. Therefore, they must have maintained both quantitative and qualitative satisfactory progress.
ADMINISTRATION
For each evaluation period, instructors will provide the Financial Aid Officer with a grade report and hour completion rate report. This report will indicate the monthly and cumulative hours and monthly and cumulative grade percentage totals. The Financial Aid Officer will then determine if the student is maintaining satisfactory progress. An Administrative Officer will counsel with those students who are in a probationary status or a suspended status.
